Leon Beyond's History of Heavy Metal Logos

I snuck into the basement of Award-nominated Leon Beyond and photographed one of his science fair projects: HOW A FACT GOES FROM AMAZING TO... BEYOND! It's apparently extrapolated from a comic appearing in his wonderful book Amazing Facts & Beyond. Here's a step-by-step walk-thru:

If you see Leon at SPX be sure to buy him a drink (N/A please).

Chicco Chariot

Here was a li'l 3-color (navy blue, silver, fluorescent lime) print I made for a print exchange with my pal Ken Wood and his printmaking students at St. Louis Community College Meramec. The theme of the exchange was "The Fool's Journey" and everyone was to contribute a (possibly very loose) interpration of a tarot card. The day I had to come up with an idea I was assembling a stroller/car seat combo for my future (now present) son...
and was inspired to take on the classic seventh card of the Major Arcana, The Chariot.
Here were some sketches:
Here was the drawing:
Final 3-color vector art:
Each artist also had to submit a silhouette pertinent to their image...
... for use on the fancy box that Ken and his awesome students designed and printed:
Oh, and these were the cool backs of each card:
See you out there on the beaten path! If you're moving slow, stay to the right.

Lux Aeterna

Here are four little paintings I did last spring for an art show at the Christ Church Cathedral in Louisville called Lux Aeterna. "Sections of hand-painted advertising signs, found on the underside of shelves, pulled from a rotting bookshelf in a St. Louis alley, restored Winter 2013" medium: Found Plywood Objects, with acrylic, gold leaf and lacquer"
Notebook sketches:

Vector sketches:
Printed out and traced on to panels:
These artifacts, bits of larger signage sawed into reusable scrap sometime mid-century, were never meant to last. Originally meant to advertise a carnival sideshow act (See! Iris the Pop-eye Girl), a science fiction space travel tale, a new lightbulb for sale (DELUXE), and a kids' novelty toy, they were never meant to be art either. They promised escape from normalcy, boredom, darkness, and opacity but really sought the escape of money from your pocket. Rather than provide eternal light, they strive for temporary delight. They probably did the trick.
